Red Bull driver Max Verstappen used a three-stop strategy and went from second on the grid to race victory and the championship lead. He alternated between the P Zero Red soft tyre (with which he started the race) and the P Zero Yellow medium, on which he finished it.
His team mate Sergio Perez and Mercedes driver George Russell, who also finished on the podium, both used a different three-stop strategy: soft-medium-medium-soft.
"It is fantastic for the Team to bring home our second 1-2 finish in three races, which was hugely important for us in the fight for both Championships. Both drivers got great starts and things were settling down quite nicely, but a massive gust of wind sent Max into a slide and that dropped him down to fourth," said Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal and CEO.
" We already knew he had a DRS issue, so at that point we decided to convert him to a three-stop strategy and give him tyre advantage over Leclerc and Russell - but we were still undecided whether a two or three stop was the better choice at that stage. With Checo on a two-stop strategy it meant both drivers were working as a Team and covering the opposition," added Horner.
Scuderia Ferrari's points haul from today's Spanish Grand Prix certainly did not live up to expectations. After a brilliant qualifying yesterday, only Carlos Sainz managed to score points today, making his way back up to fourth at the flag, having dropped down the order to 11th following a spin on lap 7.
Charles Leclerc had to retire with a power unit problem, when he had a comfortable lead over the rest of the field, with the win seemingly in the bag.
"So far this year, the team has been doing an incredible job in terms of reliability. Of course this one hurts, because we were in front all weekend and worked really well," said Leclerc.
George Russell of Mercedes secured his second podium of the season with an imperious drive, making up places at the start and then holding off Max Verstappen with an emphatic defence for several laps, at one point leading the Grand Prix, before settling in to take P3.
"I gave it everything I could to hold Max off, they were some enjoyable laps. With the Red Bulls in my mirrors, I was trying to get absolutely everything out of the car to keep them behind." said Russell.
