Red Bull driver Max Verstappen claimed his second pole position of the season, using the Cinturato Blue full wet during Q1 and the Cinturato Green intermediate in Q2 and Q3. All the drivers used just those two compounds on an inconsistently drying track during qualifying, with only Mercedes driver George Russell attempting a lap on the P Zero Red soft slick in Q3.
"Today was simply lovely. The conditions were very tricky out there, it was very slippery, but we stayed calm, we made sure we were there at the right time and we managed to put in some solid laps. It's been a nice day and overall we're having a good weekend," said Verstappen.
The FP3 session was also run in wet conditions, with the drivers starting off on the full wets again before switching to the intermediates. This was useful to help establish the crossover point between full wets and intermediates. Alpine's Fernando Alonso was quickest on the intermediates in FP3, also claiming second place in qualifying.
Fernando's lap-time on his final effort in Q3 - a 1min 21.944secs - proved good enough for his first front row grid position in ten years, which he last achieved at the 2012 German Grand Prix.
"It's an amazing result for us to take second place today, so I'm feeling very pleased. It was impossible to know the grip levels on each lap in those conditions and that made it even more challenging. In the end, I think it's a little bit unexpected to be on the front row, but it will be very nice to line-up there tomorrow," said Alonso.
Ferrari's Carlos Sainz will start from third place on the grid.
For Carlos and all the others in the final Q3 shoot-out, it all came down to the last few minutes. As the Spaniard crossed the line for the last time, he went second quickest, but moments later the experienced Alonso took the flag and went quicker, making the most of a track that had improved still further, to relegate Carlos to third.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton will line up for the Canadian Grand Prix in P4.
"P4 has never felt so good to be honest. Maybe when I was like in my first year of racing, my first year here in 2007 when I got my first P4 in quali, it felt great then. I think this kind of feels like that, but particularly because it's been a really, really difficult year," said Hamilton.
Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher qualified 5th and 6th respectively for the Canadian Grand Prix. The result marked the team's best-ever two-car qualifying effort in Formula 1 - while Schumacher's P6 result is the German's highest Formula 1 qualifying to-date.
"A very good day for the team today. As a team I think it's our best combined qualifying position - both drivers did a good job - as did the whole team in very challenging and changeable conditions. Everyone kept calm and we got the best out if it, everything worked smoothly," said Guenther Steiner, Haas Team Principal.
Alonso's teammate, Esteban Ocon, will start P7.
Hamilton's Mercedes teammate, George Russell, will start next to Ocon in the P8 position.
