Singapore GP: Sunday Results

Singapore (September 17, 2023)

Pole sitter Carlos Sainz of Ferrari won the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix on the streets of Marina Bay at the Southeast Asian city-state on Sunday night. The win was the Spaniard's second F1 win and his first for Ferrari.

McLaren's Lando Norris followed Sainz past the checkers for the best F1 finish of his career. Mercedes Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top three - the 197th podium position for the seven time World Champion.

The trio were separated by a mere 1.269 seconds - a testament to one of the more exciting Grand Prix finishes in recent memory.

The final action started during a Virtual Safety Car where Mercedes were the only two of the top five cars who pitted for new medium tires - setting up a showdown between the top three cars of Sainz, Norris and Sainz's teammate Charles Leclerc on older hard tires and the Silver Arrows of Mercedes.

Russell and Hamilton dispensed Leclerc quickly but ran out of time when trying to track down the top two with Russell eventually going off track on the final lap. Norris was difficult to pass as Sainz let Norris keep close, giving the young Brit DRS on each lap of the final Mercedes assault.

"We executed the weekend perfectly on my side and I think we managed the final thrilling part to perfection, giving Lando (Norris) DRS and controlling the pace all race long," said Sainz.

"The end of the race was very stressful, but it paid off. We knew it was going to be tough as soon as Mercedes boxed, especially with only a couple of cars for them to overtake - but we held them off, did what we needed to do and we're on the podium with P2," said Norris.

"It was clear that it was going to be difficult to win the race if we followed everyone else's strategy," said Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal & CEO. "We were aggressive and took the opportunity to put on the Medium tyre under the Virtual Safety Car. The data was robust, and we went for it. At the end, to get on the podium was great and we were very close to making it so much more than that."

The other story at Marina Bay was, with the Sainz win, the Red Bull streak of consecutive team wins (15) and Max Verstappen's streak of consecutive driver wins (10) were over. Every Verstappen win broke his own record. The consecutive team wins record is still at 15 - a record set by McLaren and tied this season by Red Bull.

"I knew this day would come and it's absolutely fine. Everyone sees how dominant we can be and they don't realise how difficult it really is, we need to get a lot of things right," said Verstappen.

Singapore went well for the younger drivers with McLaren rookie driver Oscar Piastri finishing P7 after starting P17 and Liam Lawson, filling in for an injured Daniel Riccardo, securing points for AlphaTauri after just three starts with a P9 finish.

Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, finished P8 after starting P13. Haas Racing's Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10.
