2022 World Champion Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix from the pole position at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico on Sunday, October 30th.
With his 14th win of the season Verstappen also set an F1 record for most wins in a season eclipsing the 13 achieved by Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013).
"It's just an incredible season for us as a team," said Verstappen. "I never thought I would be able to win 14 races in a year. Of course, I'm incredibly proud."
Verstappen used a soft-medium tire strategy while Mercedes opted for a medium-hard strategy for second place finisher Lewis Hamilton and teammate George Russell.
"We knew that the first stint was going to be the crucial one for us, to keep that Soft tyre alive long enough, which seemed to work," said Verstappen. "I did struggle a bit towards the end but luckily the gap was big enough to extend a few laps."
"Once we put on the Medium tyres, everything was working quite well. And I think quite early on we figured that we could make it to the end," added Verstappen.
Hamilton seemed to question the Mercedes tire strategy in the post-race press conference.
"I thought we should have started on the Soft but obviously we had the opposite tyre. It was OK in the first stint but that Hard was just offset," said Hamilton.
Russell who started second on the grid and finished fourth appeared to question the Mercedes tire strategy as well.
"I had a good start but lost two positions in the first lap and our strategy with medium - hard was not the right one in hindsight. I couldn't get the hard tyre working as there was just no grip." said Russell.
"Red Bull and Ferrari both started on the softs and we need to understand why the other teams opted for the soft as that looked like the right strategy for this race," explained Russell.
Russell claimed the Fastest Lap Award on the final lap on a set of used soft tires.
Hometown favorite Sergio Perez starting P4 but ended the race claiming a P3 podium finish to the delight of the Mexico City crowd.
"It was great to have all these people. They have been amazing the whole weekend. And it was just nice to finish off the weekend with a podium," said Perez, a native of Mexico.
Ferrari's Carlos Sainz rounded out the top five after starting the Mexico City Grand Prix from the same position.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished sixth, the final car on the lead lap.
McLaren scored double points on Sunday with Daniel Ricciardo finishing seventh and Lando Norris claiming P9.
