Round 11 of the 2023 FIA Formula 1 World Championship commenced with two practice sessions on Friday at the Silverstone Circuit, England as teams prepared for Sunday's 52-lap British Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen dominated the proceedings, topping the time sheets from FP1 and FP2 in his Red Bull RB19. Verstappen set the fastest time of the day in the second session in 1.28.078 on a set of Soft compound C3 tyres
"It was a little slippery in the beginning but that's due to the high pressures that we are running on the tyres. Of course, that is the same for everyone, but it makes it a bit more difficult in the low speed," said Verstappen.
"I think in general the car has been performing really well so we can be happy with that," said Verstappen. "The performance has also been strong in both sessions and we could complete our programme. The long runs felt good as well so it's pretty positive. From our side we want to improve the car ahead of qualifying tomorrow but overall, it's been a strong day."
After the Sprint weekend in Austria, F1 is back to the traditional format with Friday featuring two one-hour free practice sessions: the first was spent mainly searching for the best set-up on the cars, while the second was more a case of assessing the handling of the car-tyre package over short and long runs on a track which evolved considerably from one session to the next.
Williams Racing's driver Alex Albon had a great Friday going third fastest in both Free Practice sessions. His teammate, American driver Logan Sargeant, was fifth quickest in FP2.
"We got through a good amount of work in FP1 with both drivers completing their programmes, including a first look at some new aerodynamic items," said Dave Robson, Williams Racing's Head of Vehicle Performance:
"Alex ran a new front wing, which is working well; he will keep this for the rest of the weekend. Meanwhile, Logan looked at a new rear wing, which will race later in the season. Despite the distraction of doing these tests, both drivers were still able to get a good look at the track and the conditions," added Robson.
Aston Martin's driver Alonso Fernando was fourth quickest in FP1 while his teammate, Lance Stroll, was sixth quickest in FP2.
"We made a few set-up changes after FP1 and the AMR23 was feeling stronger for the second session," said Stroll. "There are still a few bits to work through tonight, but the pace looked good so I'm feeling positive."
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was unable to bring his SF-23 onto the track for Free Practice Session 2. Ferrari reported the no-show was due to a short circuit.
Free Practice session three is scheduled for 11:30am on Saturday with qualifying set for 3pm.
