Sao Paulo GP: Saturday Results

Sao Paulo, Brazil (November 4, 2023)

The final Sprint race of the 2023 Formula One season took place on Saturday afternoon at Interlagos Circuit, Sao Paulo, Brazil. As a whole, Formula One brought six Sprint races to the track this season.

On a Sprint weekend, Friday consists of a practice session and then the qualifying session for Sunday's Grand Prix. Saturday's format includes qualifying for a Saturday Sprint race (the Shootout) and then the Sprint race itself in which teams can gain points.

The Sao Paulo weather held on Saturday unlike Friday when a massive gale ended the qualifying session early and damaged an Interlagos grandstand.

For Saturday's shootout the teams were relegated to run a medium-medium-soft tyre strategy for the S1-S2-S3 sessions.

The S1 session ended 33 seconds early when Alpine driver Esteban Ocon hit the barriers through the circuit's double SS's after contact with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso who was slowed due to a tyre puncture. No further action was taken after the incident by the race stewards. Alonso could not return to the track and did not post a S2 time.

After an uneventful S2 session, McLaren's Lando Norris took the checkers for the shootout followed six one- hundredths of a second later by 2023 World Champion, Max Verstappen. The Sprint pole was McLaren's second in the last three shootouts.

The second row of the Sprint race was made up by Red Bull's Sergio Perez (P3) and Mercedes driver George Russell.

After one lap, Norris found himself in third, passed by Russell and Verstappen, who took and held the lead for his fourth Sprint win of the season.

Norris re-took second from Russell on Lap 5.

Russell was passed by Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez on Lap 10. Perez held the position for a P3 finish.

Yuki Tsunoda may have had the best performance of his short career Saturday afternoon, finishing P7, his first top 10.
