Saturday in Shanghai saw a win and a pole position on the same day for three time World Champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull. The Dutchman made a clean sweep of it on Saturday at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, winning the first Sprint Race of the season in the morning before taking his first ever pole position at this track in the afternoon.
It was the 37th pole of his career and his Red Bull team's one hundredth.
After starting the Sprint Race from fourth on the grid, Max took just nine laps to work his way to the front, passing Alonso and then Hamilton before taking off for his eighth win from 13 Sprint starts.
"The start of the Sprint was a bit tricky for me because the other drivers on the grid had new tyres, so for the first lap they had a bit more grip than I did," said Verstappen. "My battery was also completely empty, so I had to do a few changes on the wheel to try and get it back up, but once that was all sorted out the pace was good, I was able to look after my tyres well."
"Ahead of qualifying we changed the fittings on the car and they worked out really well, so I'm very pleased with that. It looks promising for the race," added Verstappen.
On the virtual podium for the "short" race, Verstappen was joined by Hamilton and Perez following some exciting duels over the final few laps, involving Alonso, Perez and the Ferrari pair of Sainz and Leclerc.
The two Spaniards came off worst with Carlos finishing fourth, having sustained front wing damage in a collision with his fellow countryman, who also had to pit because of a puncture picked up when they touched.
"To be sat on the front-row for the Sprint was a great feeling," said Hamilton. "Racing into turn one and taking the lead reminded me of what I love so much about this sport! It was a challenging race but to get second was great."
