Qualifying for the third annual Miami Grand Prix got underway this afternoon at the Miami International Autodrome just outside of Miami, FL. Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the pole Saturday afternoon for Sunday's Grand Prix - his first pole at Miami. Earlier in the afternoon, Verstappen won the Sprint event at the Autodrome after taking the pole for the event on Friday.
"The car felt better after the changes that we made, but we have found that there were quite a few combining factors that make it very tricky to drive around this track," said Verstappen.
"It has been difficult over the weekend with the tyres, as they have quite low grip, overheat quickly and we have also struggled with the balance of the car. It has just been quite unpredictable, and everyone has found that it has been difficult to put a lap in," added the three time World Champion.
Verstappen has taken the pole in all six Formula One qualifying events this season - a feat last accomplised by Alain Prost in 1993.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start outside the pole. Leclerc's teammate, Carlos Sainz, and Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, fill out the second row, third and fourth, respectively.
"I was happy with the car, we didn't change much since this morning, just did a bit of fine tuning, but overall we are in a good place," said Leclerc. "It was tricky to put together the lap and not many of us improved on that last timed lap in Q3, so P2 on the grid is not a bad result and we will push to fight for the win tomorrow."
The pair of McLaren's, Norris and Piastri, qualified P5 and P6, respectively.
"I think it's been a reasonable Qualifying. I probably couldn't have asked for a lot more," said Norris. "The team did a great job to get the car back together after the Sprint, first of all, so thank you to them after the unfortunate incident we were involved in this morning,"
"Otherwise, P5 and P6 is good for us as a team. I think that's where we deserve to be and that's all we had in the car today, so we maximised it and we'll try to get a good amount of points tomorrow," added Norris.
Mercedes will start on Row 4 with George Russell in the seventh position and Lewis Hamiton outside Russell in P8.
"Going into Qualifying, we modified the set-up slightly and changed our wing level. The car was improved but it was still difficult to land the tyres in the right window," said Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes Trackside Engineering Director
"We don't seem to be the only team struggling with that but when we got it right, the pace was strong. That said, we are well aware that we have a lot of work to do in order to improve the car," added Shovlin.
Haas Racing's, Nico Hulkenberg, who had a top ten qualifying and finish position in the Sprint race, qualified P9. Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top ten on Saturday afternoon, his fourth top ten qualifying effort out of six Grand Prix's this season.
Aston Martin, who had a top ten qualifying and finishing effort in the Sprint, struggled in Saturday afternoon's Grand Prix Qualifying, seeing Lance Stroll qualify at P11 while Fernando Alonzo's AMR24 could only muster a P15. Prior to Saturday, Alonzo has made it into the Q3 session of every Grand Prix this season.
"We struggled in Q1 and Q2 and finished in P15 in both sessions," said Alonzo, adding, "We made some set-up changes from the Sprint race to now and it seems these changes didn't work. I think it will be a challenging race tomorrow, but we'll analyse our performance tonight and try to recover some points."
The earlier 19-lap, no pit stop Sprint race was relatively uneventful with the top qualifying six positions remaining static throughout the sprint. Pole sitter Max Verstappen took the checkers followed by Charles Leclerc and Verstappen's Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez.
Lap one, Turn one of the Sprint saw the most action as several cars made contact -
ending the Sprint for McLaren's Lando Norris and Aston Martin's Lance Stroll. The event was the first of the year where McLaren did not score double points in a points race.
