Formula 1 qualifying for the 53rd Spanish Grand Prix took place on Saturday, June 22nd at Spain's Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit with McLaren's Lando Norris taking the second career pole of his F1 career. The British driver's previous pole was at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.
"A great drive by Lando, he drove qualifying faultlessly and, when it counted, put together one of the best laps of his career," said Andrea Stella, McLaren Team Principal.
"We've been quick for the last two months, and we've probably missed a pole by not having that perfect lap," said Norris. "Today, for the final run, we made a few changes, found some places to make tiny improvements and it all worked out."
Lando's teammate, Oscar Piastri qualified 10th. Piastri did not have a Q3 time after going off track on his final and only qualifying lap.
Points leader Max Verstappen will start the Spanish Grand Prix outside the pole with a qualifying time of 1:11.403 - two one-hundredth's of a second off the pace set by Norris.
"We made some good set up changes going into qualifying and the car was a lot better. I think we really maximised that and the car felt more connected and nice to drive," said Verstappen. "We were strong into the high speed and I felt really comfortable there and the high speed corners were really quick."
The W15's of Mercedes will fill out the second row at race start on Sunday. (Hamilton, Russell).
"P3 and P4 is a solid result," said Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal & CEO, "The car balance wasn't quite as good as on Friday though. Added to that, both drivers felt that there was little more time left out there."
"The gap to pole position was slightly larger than we had envisaged throughout practice, therefore. That was a little frustrating, but it is positive that we were able to get ourselves ahead of the Ferrari's," added Wolff.
The pair of Ferarri's (Leclerc, Sainz) will start the Spanish Grand Prix on Row 3.
In a somewhat surprise for the weekend, Alpine BWT racing, who has been struggling in 2024, found some speed at Spain and will start P7 and P9 (Gasly, Ocon).
"This is our best result and most significant performance of the season so far where we had both cars reach Q3," said Bruno Famin, Alpine Team Principal, adding, "We are competitive relative to our rivals - something we must better understand as to why - and see what more we can do to ensure this trend continues."
