Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz took his very first pole position after a qualifying session run in rainy conditions from start to finish. The Cinturato Green intermediates were used throughout qualifying, run in 15 degrees ambient and 19 degrees of track temperature.
The pole was number 237 for Scuderia Ferrari at Silverstone, its seventh of the season, from ten races.
"Securing my first pole at Silverstone in the wet is something special that I will never forget. The whole qualifying was very tricky, and every lap was a new adventure because of the track conditions. Finding grip and traction was a huge challenge and every lap you had to adapt. On the very last attempt I went for it and managed to put a good lap together that gave us pole," said Sainz.
Lining up on the grid box behind him will be team-mate Charles Leclerc, who saw his chances of getting on the front row disappear in a spin on his last run. Splitting the two Ferraris will be Max Verstappen.
"Unfortunately, I spun on that last lap in Q3 and didn't put it together as I wanted to, so I am disappointed, but I am happy that Carlos finished on pole," said Leclerc.
"I felt confident in the car and we were quite competitive, even in these conditions which is where we struggled quite a lot for the past two years. It's good to see that we've found some consistency in the wet," added Leclerc.
Lewis Hamilton will line up for the British Grand Prix in P5 with Mercedes
teammat George Russell starting in P8.
On their final run, Hamilton managed enough for P5 but a lock up at turn 3 for Russell left him with too much to do, eventually crossing the line in P8.
"It felt like we had made a good step with the car in the dry in FP3, and that we could be in the mix for qualifying. Obviously the rain came and we managed the session well, setting competitive laps as the rain ebbed and flowed," said Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff.
As well as being a first pole position for Sainz today, it was also a first appearance in Q3 for Williams driver Nicholas Latifi.
"A very special day in tricky conditions. To get through to Q2 was a great achievement and a nice confidence boost, and then Q3 was more than we could've hoped for," said Latifi.
The quickest strategy for the 52-lap race on Sunday is going to be a two-stopper, with a few different options on the table.
