British GP: Sunday Results

Silverstone, UK (July 3, 2022)

The British Grand Prix was won by Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz from pole - but that only tells half the story. The race was restarted after a red flag on lap one, with all but two drivers (McLaren's Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo) changing tyres.

The timing of a safety car in the closing stages of the race was another pivotal moment. It came at just the right time for Red Bull's Sergio Perez, who recovered to second place after a poor start, but disadvantaged Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who stayed out on well-used P Zero White hard tyres and slipped down to fourth, his finishing position. Leclerc was in the lead at the re-start, but was passed by Sainz, Perez, and Hamilton.

For Scuderia Ferrari it’s the third victory of the season and its 241st overall. Carlos is thus the 40th driver to win for Ferrari, the second Spaniard after Fernando Alonso. He brings the total number of drivers who have won a world championship Grand Prix to 112.

"At the restart, I had fresher tyres but we were fighting for a 1-2 as a team, so I tried to be as clean as possible in overtaking Charles. Thanks to the fuel saved behind the Safety Car we could then push until the end and finally I got my first win," said Sainz.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez finished behind Sainz for the second position on the podium.

"Physically I wasn't one hundred percent this week and after lap one I was last, so to come away with second place is a great result. I was so unlucky on the first lap making contact with Charles, I broke my front wing and had to drop to the back. So we had to fight for it and it feels good to have a result like this," said Perez.

Perez's teammate and points leader, Max Verstappen, finished in P7 after suffering some damage to his RB18.

"I hit a huge piece of debris; I think it was carbon. As I was driving it felt like a puncture as I had no balance and a lot of oversteer. The car was a handful to drive, I tried to find a good aero balance but it was difficult," said Verstappen.

Finishing in third was Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton who took his 13th podium at Silverstone to set a new record for the most podiums at a single event, while teammate George Russell suffered an early DNF. A horrific multi-car incident on the opening lap saw ZHO's upside-down Alfa Romeo skid into the barriers and the race was red-flagged immediately.

"We've got some improvements to make but this is a huge bonus for us to be on the podium. I'm glad everyone was safe from that big crash at the beginning of the day," said Hamilton.

"We started on the Hard tyre because I made a mistake in qualifying and we thought that risk gave us the best opportunity later in the race but there was just very little grip at the start," said Russell.

"It was obviously frustrating for my race because the car just had the puncture and there's no doubt we had the pace to come back to P6 today but I'm just glad that Zhou was OK," added Russell.

"I think we can all agree that the most important thing today is seeing Zhou come out of such a huge crash without any injury. What we witnessed were dramatic scenes, and once again we have to thank the great improvements in safety spearheaded by the FIA and Formula One for a positive outcome," said Frederic Vasseur, Alfa Romeo Team Principal, adding, "The work to improve safety in our sport is never done and today reminds us of just how important this is: Zhou is ok and fit to race in Austria next week."

Alpine's Fernando Alonso rounded out the top five.

Haas finished Sunday's British Grand Prix with Mick Schumacher a career-best eighth and Kevin Magnussen 10th at Silverstone Circuit - Schumacher scoring his maiden points in Formula 1 and the result marking the team's first double-points finish since 2019's German Grand Prix.

"I'm very happy for the whole team to have scored double-points today. We deserved it - it wasn't by luck - starting from P17 and P19 and ending eighth and tenth, we couldn't have wished for more," said Guenther Steiner, Haas Team Principal.

McLaren's Lando Norris finished in P6. Aston Martin's Sebastian Vettel finished in the 9th spot.
