Carlos Sainz of Ferarri qualified on the pole position for the Singapore GP at the Southeast Asian city-state on Saturday night. Sainz claimed the pole at the previous Grand Prix in Monza.
Ferrari, who had been running very quick all weekend, almost had the front row locked up until George Russell knocked Charles Leclerc down to P3 in the final seconds of Q3.
McLaren's Lando Norris and Russell's teammate Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top 5.
"As was the case in Monza, qualifying was very closely contested, so that even though Charles was less than a tenth slower than his team-mate, he had to settle for third place," said Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari Team Principal. "Charles was less than a tenth slower than his team-mate, he had to settle for third place. It will be a long race tomorrow and strategy management will be key."
"A great lap by George to get on the front row and split the Ferraris. That's certainly helped his chances tomorrow as their ability to control the race is a lot less if we can get between them," said Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes Trackside Engineering Director.
The talk at the track at the end of Saturday night, however, may have been that neither Red Bull made it out of Q2 - something that has not happened since the Russian Grand Prix in 2018. Verstappen will start P11 and Perez will start P13 on Sunday.
"First thing we need to do is put the disappointment behind us and look to work out what has caused our drop in pace and performance," said Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal. "We tried a new aero part in practice, but what we went into qualifying with is tried and tested. For whatever reason, the car just hasn't responded at this circuit."
Haas Racing had a fantastic Saturday with Kevin Magnussen qualifying P6 and Nico Hulkenberg qualifying P9 - the first time this season both drivers made it into Q3.
Racing for the first time on the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Liam Lawson, Daniel Riccardo's Alpine replacement, put in a stellar show, rounding out the top 10. Lawson was the driver in Q2 who knocked points leader Max Verstappen out of the top 10, retiring the two time World Champion from the qualifying session.
A track which turned extremely fast at the very end of Q1 and a red flag crash by Lance Stroll created an interesting top 5 coming out of the session with Yuki Tsunoda first, followed by Perez, Hulkenberg, Lawson and Magnussen. Tsunoda did not set a time in Q2.
